February 21, 2026 [Davidson, North Carolina] – On Saturday, February 21, NCYO hosted another interactive Instrument Discovery Day (IDD) at Davidson United Methodist Church. To add to the excitement of the day, Orchestra performed a family concert for IDD attendees.
NCYO director and Orchestra instructor Eric Boruff opened the concert by introducing the four instrument families of the orchestra—strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion—giving young audience members a foundation for what they would hear throughout the morning’s concer. As the program unfolded, students were encouraged to actively listen, identify the unique sounds of each section, recognize character themes and musical motifs, and discover how rhythm and melody are shared across the orchestra to help tell a story. The interactive approach helped transform the performance into a hands-on learning experience, engaging both students and families in a deeper understanding of how music works.
Following the performance, families and children had the opportunity to explore a variety of orchestral instruments and recieved hands-on instruction from NCYO’s knowledgable artistic faculty and student and family volunteers.
The next Instrument Discovery Day will by Saturday, March 28. The next Instrument Discovery Day + Family Concert will by Saturday, April 25. To claim your free spot at either of these events register here.
